The Maritime Collection documents a rare and historically significant assemblage of original Art Deco relief panels created for the 1935 Philadelphia Naval Hospital, representing one of America’s most important institutional Art Deco commissions.
Produced during the height of the WPA era, these works embody the heroic maritime symbolism and disciplined modernism that defined Depression-era naval architecture. Conceived as part of a federal public art program, they reflect a moment when architecture and ornament were deliberately employed to project strength, resilience, and national identity. These works survive today as rare physical records of America’s interwar maritime identity.
The collection includes a pair of monumental aluminum bas-relief panels, accompanied by a large congressional plaque, depicting naval vessels, maritime insignia, and stylized oceanic motifs. Salvaged during the hospital’s renovation, the works have undergone comprehensive authentication, including archival research, material analysis, and full provenance documentation. Together, they represent the craftsmanship of WPA-era artisans responsible for some of the most ambitious and enduring institutional Art Deco installations in the United States.
This digital catalog provides complete scholarly documentation, including historical photographs, architectural drawings, material specifications, condition reports, and provenance research. The collection has been evaluated by recognized maritime historians and Art Deco specialists.
